Chapter Ten
THE EVENING was cool enough for Travis and Geoff to sit out in back and watch the sunset. Travis took another bottle of beer from the cooler by his feet, twisted off the cap, and offered it to Geoff, who declined.
Travis took a sip. “What’s wrong, Geoff?” Travis had noticed the unhappy look on Geoff’s face.
Geoff glanced up. “This is my last night here, and I thought it would be different.”
Travis knew Geoff was thinking about Don, Robbie, and the dozens of people who had flocked to the ranch when they’d heard Travis was home. The last of them had departed only half an hour ago. Travis shifted his chair closer to Geoff and reached out to him. The gesture always seemed to cheer Geoff up, and he managed to smile a little.
“I’m sorry this hasn’t been a very exciting day for ya with all those people crowding in here. I wanted them to leave too, but most of them are in the music business, and if I ignored them, my career would be ruined.”
“No, I guess you couldn’t…. I just didn’t get to spend much time alone with you, as we’d planned,” Geoff said.
“I’ll be back in LA in a couple of weeks, and I promise we’ll spend time together.”
Travis suddenly dropped to his knees on the hard deck in front of Geoff, and crossed his heart. Geoff was surprised at the gesture and felt his cheeks burn.
“Travis, you don’t have to get on your knees for me. I believe you.” Geoff stood, pulling Travis up with him.
“I’m glad you do, because I love you, Geoff,” Travis said. He took Geoff by the hand, led him back into the house, and made him sit on one of the chairs in the living room. Travis grabbed his guitar from beside the piano. He strummed a few chords and started playing. A few bars into the song, he began to sing. Geoff sat back and listened until Travis abruptly stopped.
“Please go on, Travis. It’s beautiful.”
“It’s the new song I’m working on. My brothers and my manager have been asking for it for a couple of months. I’m going to present it to them for the new album when we meet in Nashville next week,” Travis said, laying the guitar aside.
“I don’t know much about country ballads, but I think this song will be a hit.”
“Thank you. I’m hoping so.” Travis bowed slightly and suddenly started for the front door.
Geoff followed him, asking, “Where are you going?”
They walked off the porch and across the field in front of the house.
“I thought I saw a shadow in the window.” Travis scanned the grounds.
“Maybe it was one of the people who were here earlier and they forgot something.”
“They would have come to the front door, not looked in the window.”
They walked down the driveway to the front gate. It was getting darker now, and they couldn’t see much, only shadows of trees around the house.
Travis shook his head. “Must’ve been my imagination.”
“Do you think we should call the cops?” Geoff reached into his pocket for his cell phone.
